Liquid cooled generators take on the demanding applications that air cooled generators arenÂ’'t big enough to handle. They have larger engines, larger structures and can provide as much as 150kW of power. These engines require liquid cooling simply because there are more, larger, moving parts. These parts move faster than the parts in an air cooled generator and produce more heat. The air is not enough to keep the parts cool, therefore, a liquid cooling system is required. The actual physical size of the generator provides more space for the rotor and stator, which produce the wattage. These units are a little easier to maintain because they are so much larger. Smaller generators are more compact making filters and spark plugs harder to access. Some of the commercial generators are 8'Â’ wide and 6'Â’ tall. It is much easier to reach inside and change parts than in the smaller models.
No matter what generator you choose from this category there are some things they all have in common. Although each unit in this category can be powered by natural gas or propane, they are not all duel fuel. This means that on some models you have to specify at the time of purchase whether or not you plan to use natural gas or propane. If having the ability to change the fuel after purchase is important, then you should make that clear when you are looking for the generator. Other than the 25kW generator, these models are so large that we cannoÂ’t offer a liftgate delivery. What that means is that you will have to have equipment, usually a forklift and chain, to remove it out of the truck upon delivery. These models are only meant to provide backup power. These units, no matter how big, cannot be used as a continuous, primary source of power. Generally, only diesel generators specified for off grid use can be used as a primary power source.
Small Liquid Cooled Generators: In an attempt to make the selection a lot easier for you what we’'ll do is group the generators into 3 different sections. From those sections you should be to determine what kilowatt size would best suit your needs. The first section that we’ll talk about will be called the “Small” section. These units will consist of the 22kW - 30kW models. They are on the smaller side of the liquid cooled generator spectrum. Air cooled units are tough, but what if you lose power often? When you lose power is it for many days at a time? Are you in an area with high temperatures year-round? That’s when you might want to start looking into a liquid cooled generator and these smaller units offer that comfort at a reasonable price.
Medium Liquid Cooled Generators: If you have a home that is fully electric or that has a service equal to 400 amps or more than you’ll want a unit from the “Medium” section. Those models will be the 36kW – 60kW models. We'’re definitely not talking about your typical homes here. This section is usually for massive houses or businesses. Typical residential use of this sized generator would be when you want to power more than one panel on one generator. If that’'s what you need, after consulting with your electrician, then you should be able to find a generator to fit your needs here.
Large Liquid Cooled Generators: The final section we will talk about is the “large” section. These are monstrous units. They will include the 70kW –- 150kW models. Generac has a larger industrial selection, but we are not an industrial dealer. You can however, find Pramac diesel generators up to 549kW on our site. The units in this section typically aren'’t for home use at all, however if you have a huge commercial location it might work for you. We highly recommend speaking with a licensed electrician before buying any unit of this size because they are special order (built specifically for you), and, there are different voltage options as well. We want your experience with us to be as easy as possible. When it comes to large generators mistakes will be very costly and time consuming to fix.
